Request Details | To Technical Committee of 2025 Hansa Worlds, I am requesting an exemption from Sailing Instruction 3.5 “[DP] Whilst racing, Mobile phones are not permitted to be used onboard.” I use an old phone as my timer, as I have not found another timing device that works with my limited hand function. If the device were not a phone, it would be permissible under Class Rule C.5.2 (4) Optional Equipment - “Electronic or mechanical timing devices (the device shall be removable for weighing) including any brackets or other form of attachment.” The phone has an app designed for regatta timing that speaks the time via headphones. It has large buttons that are easy for me to tap, and prevents accidental tapping of buttons once the start sequence has begun. The phone I use is solely for this purpose. The phone has no SIM card (and indicates such) and thus is not capable of communication. The phone is not used during the race for any communication or GPS tracking. At this late date, it would be impossible for me to develop an alternative method for timing the starts. Sincerely yours, Michael Lung |
Reply Details | Approved provided the phone has no SIM card installed and is not capable of communication or GPS tracking while racing. The phone shall be presented for inspection by the Technical Committee on Monday 24 March prior to racing and may be inspected by a representative of the Technical Committee at any time during the regatta (SI 21.3). |
