In light of surging cases of covid on the Peninsula the Couta Boat Association and SSCBC have made the joint decision to postpone the Portsea Cup and Picnic scheduled for this weekend.

The Portsea Cup is the premier race of the season and organisers felt it was unwise to proceed with so many crews impacted by cases and ongoing concerns around large groups. The inability to obtain rapid tests has made it even more difficult to proceed.

President of the CBA James Mighell says “this is a temporary blow and the Portsea Cup and Picnic will be proceeding later in the summer season. We want all our sailors and supporters to be able to compete fairly and enjoy the spectacle”.

Club Captain Tim Collett supported the decision and said plans to run something smaller were also abandoned to avoid putting pressure on crews and staff. He says “the sailing committee have met and decided this weekend will be a circuit breaker. We will still provide a basic tender and safety service and encourage people to go for a social sail with their family groups. We expect racing to commence next week as rapid tests become available.”
