Submitted Date/time:  02 Feb 2014 15:13
Hearing Details: Broken trapeze on second beat

Facts Found

  1. On the second upwind leg, a plastic trapeze rope lock on boat number 19 broke, causing the boat to capsize.

  2. The skipper attempted to continue the race but capsised again and retired from the race.

  3. After the race, a number of boats were found to have the trapeze rope locks incorrectly tied in a way which could lead to premature failure.

  4. It is possible to change from the correct to the incorrect arrangement without untying any lines.

  5. Prior damage may have been disguised behind an incorrectly tied knot.

Conclusion

Boat 19s position in the race was made significantly worse by setup of the equipment differing from factory specifications through no fault of his own.
