Hearing Details: Broken trapeze on second beat |
Facts Found | - On the second upwind leg, a plastic trapeze rope lock on boat number 19 broke, causing the boat to capsize.
- The skipper attempted to continue the race but capsised again and retired from the race.
- After the race, a number of boats were found to have the trapeze rope locks incorrectly tied in a way which could lead to premature failure.
- It is possible to change from the correct to the incorrect arrangement without untying any lines.
- Prior damage may have been disguised behind an incorrectly tied knot.

|
Conclusion | Boat 19s position in the race was made significantly worse by setup of the equipment differing from factory specifications through no fault of his own.
